Westminster Christian Academy state girls tennis

The Westminster Christian Academy finished second in the Class 1 girls state team tennis tournament.

Both the semifinal and finals matches were played on the same day. The Wildcats took care of business in the morning semifinal by defeating Bishop LeBlond 5-1.

The state final match against Kennett got off to a good start with a 2-1 performance in the doubles session before the six simultaneous singles matches began with the first team to five wins capturing the trophy. The matches were close and the intensity was high as Kennett came back to win three of the first five and tie up the score at four matches each.

That meant the last match on the courts would decide the outcome. Kennett won the first set in that match before Westminster came back in the second to win 7-5 and set up a tiebreaker third match. In the tiebreaker, the set is decided by the first player to 10 points and it was a nerve-wracking seesaw back and forth before Kennett pulled away for a 10-7 win.

The Wildcats squad consisted of Kate Harper, Grace Lojka, Ava Hornburg, Coco Francisco, Avery Surber, Kate Dempsey, Alexis Hackman, Keeley O’Meara, Claudine Sein, Ellie Jones and Greta Larsen.
