Thomas Sowell - Random Events
Sometimes unrelated events nevertheless tell a coherent story.
One newspaper story that caught my eye recently was about two high-powered schools in South Korea where Korean girls study 15 hours a day, preparing themselves for tests to get into elite colleges in the United States. Harvard, Yale and Princeton already have 34 students from those schools.
When a copy of the 50th anniversary report on members of the Harvard class of 1958 arrived in the mail recently, I thought back to one of my fellow students in that class who had worn a hole in the sole of his shoe but put a folded piece of newspaper in his shoe to cover the hole, rather than tell his parents. ‘Shadowing’ program at local fire departments
People interested in becoming firefighters can explore the career field in area fire departments through a program that offers real-life scenarios in the daily life of a firefighter.
Joey Newton, 20, is one of the members of the program, called “Explorer,” that the Monarch Fire Protection District, Metro West Fire Protection District and Eureka Fire Protection District offer. Newton, a St. Louis Community College sophomore who is pursuing a fire science degree to accompany his paramedic degree, said the Explorer program gives him hands-on experience he cannot obtain in the classroom.

Light Fight
When Chesterfield City Councilmember Connie Fults (ward 4) asked St. Louis County highway officials to review the left-hand turn situation at the intersection of Wild Horse Creek Road and Baxter Road, the County said it did not recognize a need for left hand turn signal at the intersection.
However, Fults said that residents of her ward notified her of a persistent problem for drivers heading southbound on Baxter Road that want to make a left hand turn onto Wild Horse Creek Road. The lack of a left turn signal has caused several accidents in the area. More

The opening of the new swimming pool at Bluebird Park in Ellisville has been pushed back a bit. Ellisville officials had hoped to have the pool open for this summer season.
However, Ellisville City Clerk Kate Demeter said the start date has been pushed back about six or seven weeks. New Ellisville Parks Director Lisa Blumer said she hopes the pool now will be open by August, but that date remains uncertain as well. More
