Rating Police Officers

Everyone has the “right to be informed,” at least according to the increasingly popular Web site ratemycop.com.

With the abundance of technology in today’s world, people can tell the world about an experience that they have with a local police officer just with the click of the mouse. This increasingly popular Web site allows the average person to rate the police officers in their communities.

However, the existence of such a Web site – and numerous other blogs that are available on the World Wide Web to discuss the actions, good or bad, of police officers – has raised some concerns about privacy as well as safety.

While some say that that Web site is a good place for people to provide positive feedback and also hold these public servants accountable to the very public that they serve, it also has some dangerous drawbacks. More

Earthquakes: Should we be worried?

When earthquakes rattled and awakened people from their sleep in the early morning hours of April 18 and again on May 5, many wondered if they should be alarmed and start preparing for the “big one.”

However, some experts on earthquakes say that despite the fact that most people felt those two earthquakes, it actually is common for the earth to shift on a fairly frequent basis without most of us detecting it. More

St. Louis County Election Board officials are looking for election poll workers. These workers can earn extra income and gain satisfaction in helping the community, some current poll workers say.

Thomas Sowell - Random Events

Sometimes unrelated events nevertheless tell a coherent story.

One newspaper story that caught my eye recently was about two high-powered schools in South Korea where Korean girls study 15 hours a day, preparing themselves for tests to get into elite colleges in the United States. Harvard, Yale and Princeton already have 34 students from those schools.

When a copy of the 50th anniversary report on members of the Harvard class of 1958 arrived in the mail recently, I thought back to one of my fellow students in that class who had worn a hole in the sole of his shoe but put a folded piece of newspaper in his shoe to cover the hole, rather than tell his parents. ‘Shadowing’ program at local fire departments

People interested in becoming firefighters can explore the career field in area fire departments through a program that offers real-life scenarios in the daily life of a firefighter.

Joey Newton, 20, is one of the members of the program, called “Explorer,” that the Monarch Fire Protection District, Metro West Fire Protection District and Eureka Fire Protection District offer. Newton, a St. Louis Community College sophomore who is pursuing a fire science degree to accompany his paramedic degree, said the Explorer program gives him hands-on experience he cannot obtain in the classroom. Light Fight

When Chesterfield City Councilmember Connie Fults (ward 4) asked St. Louis County highway officials to review the left-hand turn situation at the intersection of Wild Horse Creek Road and Baxter Road, the County said it did not recognize a need for left hand turn signal at the intersection.

However, Fults said that residents of her ward notified her of a persistent problem for drivers heading southbound on Baxter Road that want to make a left hand turn onto Wild Horse Creek Road. The lack of a left turn signal has caused several accidents in the area. More

National EMS Week

Officials with area fire and emergency support districts are recognizing National EMS Week through local programs.

National EMS Week, held May 18–24, brings together local communities and medical personnel to publicize safety and honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine’s “front line,” said Scott Barthelmass, Eureka Fire Protection District’s public information officer. Opening of Ellisville pool delayed

The opening of the new swimming pool at Bluebird Park in Ellisville has been pushed back a bit. Ellisville officials had hoped to have the pool open for this summer season.

However, Ellisville City Clerk Kate Demeter said the start date has been pushed back about six or seven weeks. New Ellisville Parks Director Lisa Blumer said she hopes the pool now will be open by August, but that date remains uncertain as well. More

First portion of Chesterfield Levee Trail is complete

When the ribbon cutting for the Monarch Chesterfield Levee Trail occurred on April 29, it marked the completion of the first 4-mile segment of a 17-mile loop in an area that is known by the Great Rivers Greenway District as the Missouri River Greenway.

According to the Great Rivers Greenway District, the Monarch Chesterfield Levee Trail eventually will head east past the Summit Ice Center where it will meet up with the Missouri Central Railroad line, which also is known as the old Rock Island Railroad line. More
